Make Documenting Your Software Easier Than Ever Before

Here at M6.Net we’ve just released our new control panel software, allowing for easier and better control over our clients’ website accounts. It was my task to write the documentation for this new software. After working through it in a traditional word processor application and subsequently producing a final product that was of little use, we came to realize that there needed to be a better way to write a manual, and to release it in multiple formats. One of the lead developers sent a link my way and after trying the evaluation copy of the software I realized that it was the package that we needed. ‘Help and Manual 4′ turns manual writing and distribution into a very simple affair.

The Help and Manual (hereafter known as H&M) homepage (http://www.helpandmanual.com/) states that “Help & Manual makes producing help a pleasure” and this is a fairly accurate little catchphrase. When I first tried the evaluation version or edition 3 a while ago, it frustrated me that I had to copy and paste every page of the manual from the word processor into H&M. This was a daunting task even for our modest sized manual that runs just over 50 pages. With the newer version however, all I had to do was export the document to Rich Text Format and use the import feature in H&M. The software went off and did its thing, returning to me with a nice manual file broken into sections based on the various headings in the document. While there were a few minor layout glitches these were easily solved, and the overall benefit of being able to directly import the manual was a huge timesaver. While it took me 3 shifts (about 4 hours a piece) to import and format the manual manually, with the new version of H&M, I had it all looking and working nicely within a single shift and still had time to edit and modify the document.

The second feature that impressed me greatly was the sheer number of output formats available to the manual writer. The formats include HTML Help, Classic Winhelp, VStudio help, Browser based help (HTML pages), Adobe PDF, MSWord manual and eBook. There’s bound to be an option or two that are right for your manual. For us it was perfect. We could create an HTML file for online help, and a downloadable PDF version of the document for offline perusal. Each output style is fully customizable, particularly the document outputs which can be modified with a handy tool called the “Print Manual Designer”. This comes included with H&M and allows you to design the overall look of your manual in an easy and self-affirming way.

I’ve spent a while talking about the input and output options, but not the functionality. I’m pleased to say that the interface is straight forward and all the expected options (or at least all the options that I expected) are included. You control the layout in a tree structure on the left hand side of the screen. This determines the numbering of your sections in the final exported manual. Then there are the many standard formatting options like font attributes, tables, character insertion, image insertion etc, but there are also more unique media options. It’s possible to embed movie, sound, flash, and other files straight into your manual. This allows you to make a demonstration video illustrating the point the manual is trying to make and include it as part of the documentation. Obviously the viability of this depends upon your chosen output format.

There are a few unique tools that I thought were exceptional concepts. The first is the Syntax Highlighter that allows you to highlight code in your manual to look much the same as code in a development environment. I didn’t actually have reason to use it and test it, but I think the idea is a great one.

The second is the Screen Capture tool. This useful little gadget hides the H&M window and allows you to capture an image of any control or window in an open program by simply holding the Ctrl key and then clicking the window. This image is saved into your images folder and inserted into the manual. It’s quick and easy to use and saves a lot of time when compared to the alternative method (opening the program, hitting print screen, cropping the image to a desired size, and importing it into the H&M software).

Overall I was very impressed with ‘Help and Manual 4′. Beyond being a basic conversion tool, it makes it very easy to write your entire manual using just the functionality of the software. Once your information is all inputted there are many customization and layout options to get it looking just how you want it. When you’re done you can output it to many different formats. Help and Manual made writing and distributing our manual quick and easy. Check it out at http://www.helpandmanual.com

Pros:

- Excellent output options
- Comprehensive formatting tools allow complete control of a project’s look
- Screen capture tool
- Good import options

Cons:

- There can be some formatting errors when importing from a document.
- You can’t select a network folder for your images folder. It is limited to your local hard drive(s).

Score: 4/5

Earth Calamity Sun Spot Warning System

Currently there are special systems, which watch for solar activity and sun spot activity, which might damage space assets, communication satellites or even human life on Earth. Additionally many scientists, researchers and geologists believe that Sun activity is the cause of seismic and volcanic activity as well. Climatologists, meteorologists and weather researchers know that solar activity is a major factor in the intensity of Earth weather here at home.

Sunspots and large solar flares cause significant changes in space weather and hurl massive coronal ejections our way, which are said to affect everything from gravity, aurora borealis and even tidal motion. We know that moon cycles do change these things too and we also know that during full moon or new moon cycles and severe solar flare combo periods that generally anything can happen.

In fact if you look at the recent records of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Hurricanes you can see a correlation to the more severe ones, which coincides with these other factors and now scientists are looking at changes in resonance and Earth events during full moon and solar flares. What was once said to be pseudo science is now making mainstream scientists wonder even more about our Earth and the surface of it where humans reside.

We need a faster and better warning system for NASA, Moon Colonies, Private Space Flight Charter Companies and all those humans on Earth which operates in real time and can warn us of an impending large solar flare so we can more quickly get our ducks in a row and prepare. Although we have current ways to monitor these things, we need a better system and thus must put forth R and D monies to make a superior warning system soon. Think on this in 2006.

Mass Market Laptops for Gaming Have Arrived

The times where gaming laptops were a specialist market are disappearing extremely fast. Before the small number of sales alleviated by the profit margins. They were the kind of laptop computer everybody wanted but the one they just could not buy. They were like the show piece of what could be done with notebook technology. The best laptops in existence. I reckon they would provide us with an indication of what’s to be launched but no one would seriously buy laptops for gaming at that time. As larger companies see the opportunities in the gaming laptop market, things looks to have shifted.

Compared to the tiny resellers these companies know they can make even more margin. As the profit margins on mid range notebooks have gotten so tiny, producing specialized gaming notebook computers is one tactic to render a higher gross markup. They can also use their large marketing budgets to seduce buyers further into parting with their savings or bringing out the charge cards to buy laptops like these ones. This is a giant threat to smaller niche resellers. With the things at their disposal they could simply get rid of smaller competition. I think customers will trust the larger brands more if they get something high priced. I reckon its funny that as it comes with a brand name they’re carelessly though of as the best laptops. Still though, for the little small retailers this may prove to be positive. Consumers like to be able to customize as they can specify what is most desirable to their requirements. Such consumers are normally techies and can check all the minute details. In some cases the speed is way more important than the styling for certain types of people.

For the prospect, this holds plenty of advantages. As this pushes down the prices even further, top end technology will get increasingly affordable to the customer. I mention that with a large amount of uncertainty though. New laptop computers are continuously coming out and these new systems usually go for premium prices. Even though I still think outcomes will be good due to the saturating market, we’ll have to watch.

Anthony Loeff nonprofit volunteer is writing about screen readers

Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Nevertheless, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. However functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix.

This season Anthony Loeff nonprofit worker is reporting digital tools for visually impaired Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen.

Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Almost 20 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. Most legally blind people 61 percent do not use computers. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output.

MLM Success- Money in MLM- The Three Things that Money Magnifies in Network Marketing

Money is a Magnifier.

That is an awesome thought! And so true. Money is an amazing thing. It can create, and destroy. It can magnify and clarify. And it can intensify and multiply you.

But many networkers I have observed, and with my own experience, that many people who have never really had that much money before can be perceived differently once they have “hit it big” in MLM. Many people say, “They have changed…they are not the same people”.

Oh really? We need to take a closer look.

Most people today live in a financial pressure cooker. Their world revolves around that 8×10 envelope with a paycheck in it. And the lack of money magnifies their concern for the future, and their concern for even survival.

Money also magnifies their emotions and feelings outwardly. Financial Pressure can do some interesting things to relationships and marriages. And when the slightest “crack in the armor” appears, and the real person starts to show up, money magnifies that tremendously.

Most people today are clueless to the fact that the lack of and the abundance of money can magnify everything about them, good or bad. And many times, money can work against you as far as your life. It magnifies things that people are not aware of.

Ok….what are those things?

Money magnifies three things that will determine if you truly are wealthy or not. As my mentor taught me…”Being rich is about possessions. Being wealthy is about what you do with them”. In other words, being rich is about having a lot of money. Being wealthy is about having lifestyle to go with it.

And money can magnify your focus to a large extent in you life. There are many rich people out there who don’t live a wealthy lifestyle. Their money magnifies their fear of losing it, or not being worthy of it, or fear of not being able to repeat it.

The three things that money magnifies are:

1)”Your relationship to money”.

You either have a scarcity relationship with money, or you have an increase relationship with it. Most of how we view money we heard growing up, and it was magnified in our life:

“What do you think I am made of…money?” “Money doesn’t grow on trees!” “Money is the root to all evil”. ” Things are tight this month”. “I have enough money to pay my bills”.

THAT is scarcity thinking about money, and that is magnified in your life, and it then is magnified even more with the lack of money being constant.

If you have suddenly have money, and have never had it before, and you have a scarcity relationship with money, that will be magnified in your life. And the money will go eventually away if you don’t change your relationship.

You need to have a healthy relationship and expectation for money. If you do, increase will be magnified in your life, and the money will magnify that fact by showing up in boat loads.

2)” Your relationship with others”.

Money magnifies how you really interact with people. If you have the financial pressure as most do, the lack of money will magnify that in your conversations, and who you hang around with. Money magnifies the concern in conversations, and thoughts. Listen to how a lot of people obsess about lack of money. And that obsession is magnified in their life. And if you want to find out how people really relate to others, watch them when they are down and out, and watch them when they are financially secure. Most people will not act the same. Money magnifies and clarifies your relation ship with others by your words, emotions, and how you interact, with and without pressure.

I have seen many people who suddenly hit it big, treat others differently than they did when they were on their way up. The true relationship with others emerges and is magnified with the money being in overabundance. Make sure that when you hit it big, money magnifies your ability to treat people the same no matter what. THAT will be success seeds worth sowing.

3)”Your relationship with yourself”.

Simply, money magnifies how you feel about you. I have seen many people when they get money, completely change physically, due to tucks, snips, lifts, augmentation, and lipo. They did not like how they looked, and wanted to fix it. When money showed up, that discontent was magnified, and intensified.

If you feel good about yourself, money will not really change you much. Money will magnify that to everyone. If you are not happy with you, money will magnify that fact as well.

How do you REALLY feel about you? Get a lot of money and you will find out quickly, as it is being magnified to you in your life.

Money truly is a magnifier. It will enlarge and put in focus what most people don’t know about you, good or bad. Make sure that money magnifies only the best about you, as that is what you want to sat in focus, and be seen crystal clear. Money will magnify and expose who you really are. Nature will naturally take care of that. How do I know? MONEY= Magnification Of Nature Exposing YOU.

MLM Success truly exposes the REAL You.

blessings…doug

Success in Business!

Here is a secret that may be difficult for you to believe, so prepare yourself. It is an extremely important secret that can have a most profound impact on your small business success, or it’s failure.

Let’s start by asking a simple question…Do you enjoy sales?

The truth of the matter is that when many small business owners are asked this question, they respond with answers like, “No way” or “I can’t stand sales, let someone else do it.”

Why is your answer to the above question so important? No doubt you have seen headlines like the following, which glorify how easy and simple it is to succeed in business:

“The Ultimate Lazy Way To Start Your Own Business”

“Cash In On A Multi-Billion Dollar Industry In Your Underwear”

“Easily Generate A Lucrative Income While Sleeping”

We are constantly being bombarded with these “easy ways” to make a million bucks. Does success in business actually work this way? Not in reality! Is it realistic? Not even close!

The bottom line in operating a successful long-term business comes down to your ability to sell your product…period. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. You can either sell your own product or resell somebody’s else’s product. Either way, your success or failure will ultimately depend on your ability to market it. If you don’t enjoy sales, you have very little chance to succeed in business for yourself.

The most prevalent attitude of many new business owners is that their product, once launched, will miraculously sell itself. After all, the product is awesome and everybody will absolutely, positively want one. People should be lining up to buy it, right?

Here is another truth about sales. It will take 5-7 sales attempts to close 80% of your sales. Yes, you read that correctly. That’s 5-7 attempts before people will say “Yes, I want to buy your product.” Running an advertisement one-time or making a sales pitch to a potential customer once in a while does not qualify as effort. Hearing that first “no” and subsequently giving up means the demise of your business and gives someone else an opportunity to turn that NO into a YES.

What most people don’t realize or fail to accept is that it may take weeks, months or even years to get a product to sell according to your expectations. You may have to frequently change your sales pitch, web site, advertisement or even the product until you get it right. This dedication and determination is what separates the very few successful business owners from the many “wannabes” and fly-by-night hopefuls.

The bottom line is that to be successful in ANY business you will need talent and the ability to sell, sell, sell.

DVD Basic Facts

DVDs have become ubiquitous. Whenever we want to watch a movie or listen to some music we reach out for a DVD. Here are some basic facts about the DVD:

What is a DVD?

DVD is short of Digital Versatile Disk. A DVD-ROM closely resembles a CD or compact disk. However, a DVD-ROM is formatted to hold far more data. While a CD commonly has a capacity of 650 megabytes, the smallest capacity DVD can store about seven times more data, or 4.38 gigabytes (GB). A DVD-ROM encodes data in the form of a spiraling trail of pits and lands separated by mere nanometers. There are various kinds of DVDs. The DVD-ROM is the most common. It is a disk that cannot be written over. Blank DVDs with designations like “DVD-R” and “DVD+R” are formatted, recordable DVDs. The -R and +R refer to competing format standards, but both will record movies, audio or other data. The best examples of DVD-ROMs are the music and film DVDs that can be bought off the shelf.

What is DVD authoring?

Authoring is the process of collecting audio, video, menus, subtitles, etc onto a DVD. In common parlance it is called burning. This is done on DVD authoring software. There are numerous DVD authoring programs but which you use depends on your need, be it personal, professional or corporate.

How is DVD duplication carried out?

Duplication is an industrial process where a glass master used to physically stamp copies out like a cookie cutter.

What is DVD video?

DVD video is technically superior and the closest we have to studio quality video. Digital studio master tapes are usually encoded from to MPEG-2 format to create a DVD video. The encoding process uses lossy compression that removes redundant information.

What is a DVD menu?

A DVD menu allows easy access to the titles without having to scan the DVD. This is both convenient and accurate. A DVD could have a main menu with 4 title sets each containing a menu and a single title. All the titles are made from multiple input files and each input file is one chapter.
What is a menu? Menus are just an mpeg file with subtitles. The basic mpeg is the background and the subtitles produce the menu buttons. The background can either be a short movie or a still image converted to an mpeg. MPEG stands for “Motion Picture Experts Group.” It stands for the committee that dreamed up the MPEG-2 compression algorithm. MPEG-2 is the de-facto standard compression technology used for DVD video.
