Botox is swiftly becoming the latest trend amongst Sydney’s fashionable crowd and has become a beauty routine must for people in the city.
But I never cease to be surprised when I listen to the rumours surrounding the treatment. I have included below some of the popular stories that I hear everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a physician.
Myth # 1: My facial muscles will freeze!
There are sixty or so muscles in the human face. They normally perform harmoniously, however over a period of time fine lines can start to form. Too large a dose of Botulinum Toxin may lead to the musculature of the face looking over relaxed. Most doctors would use comparatively minute dosages to make you look ‘refreshed’, but still you will always keep your facial expression.
Thus by using tiny quantities of the Botox in precisely the right tissues one will get a softening of the fine lines without reducing facial expression.
Myth # 2: Botox is poisonous!
This to some extent is right. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmacological terminology. An overdose can loosen muscles that you do not want loosened or may even make one very ill.
However to help keep everything in perspective: a famous pharmacist’s saying states that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. Every medicinal drug might make anyone unwell in large enough doses. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.
Myth # 3: Botox hurts!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician utilises a hypodermic needle smaller than human hair. Some individuals have equated the shots to getting bitten by bugs. Definitely not in the same league as compared to having a vaccination.
Myth # 4: I might lose sensation in my face!
Not true. Botox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Botox just targets the relaxation of muscles.
Myth # 5. You have to keep having Botox or else the lines become even worse!
This is also incorrect.
BoTox is expected to last for upwards of 3 months. Any further treatments after the initial one usually last a few weeks more. The wrinkles will slowly return as the muscle returns to normal. Nevertheless they definitely won’t be any deeper than when you commenced your treatment.
Even if you never had Botox treatments ever again - any wrinkles will most likely be a little less pronounced than if you had not been treated. This is typically due to the fact you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
