How Might the Telecoms Industry Be Restructured in the Future?

One of the most important developments in the VoIP industry in recent times has been the growth of mobile VoIP technology. Although its early days for the mobile VoIP operators such as Truphone, it certainly seems they have the capacity to reshape the industry quite dramatically. Some of the recent older mobile operators’ actions seem evidence of this with T-Mobile recently being forced to allow the use of Truphone over its network, having previously blocked calls to Truphone allocated numbers.

Whilst some industry insiders argue that as VoIP prices tend towards zero, this is making it a very hard industry to make any substantial profit in; the wider availability of cut cost ultra fast broadband and has resulted in a huge surge in the availability of free Wi-Fi. Consequently this is making mobile VoIP operators an increasingly attractive proposition for consumers. The trend in the availability of new ’smart phones’ with the ability to run mobile VoIP client software, at ever decreasing prices is also, it could be argued, creating a tipping point in the industry.

We have recently seen T-Mobile announce their Voice over IP service called @home giving customers the option of paying a single low monthly flat rate. However whilst the industry is finding home owners reluctant to abandon their fixed phone line completely, mobile VoIP companies have no such issue to contend with. The seamless integration of mobile VoIP software into the functionality of mobile phones, as well as the reduced cost of data-inclusive price schemes has resulted in a predictably rapid growth in the mobile VoIP sector.

At present it has been reported that there are 4 million VoIP customers in the UK, and its likely this figure will go up. How established mobile phone operators will take advantage of this growth remains to be seen but the decision to force T Mobile to allow calls to Truphone users surely transmits a clear signal that rather than try and resist the mobile VoIP operators, the entranched industry monoliths must find a way of working with them.

One problem which could have an impact on the take-up of mobile Voice over IP is security, with many highly publicized stories highlighting the vulnerabilities in making calls using VoIP. Another problem to to confront is ‘VoIP phishing’ where people are duped into giving up their personal data voluntarily after falling for a thief’s lure. This is also symptomatic of other VoIP security issues where unscrupulous would be thieves can tamper with the caller ID making it look as though they are calling from well known financial institutions. Once such stumbling blocks have been resolved and fears allayed it is likely that mobile VoIP will become much more prevalent in everyday life as people take the opportunity to turn their mobiles into VoIP phones.

Mass Market Laptops for Gaming Have Arrived

The times where gaming laptops were a specialist market are disappearing extremely fast. Before the small number of sales alleviated by the profit margins. They were the kind of laptop computer everybody wanted but the one they just could not buy. They were like the show piece of what could be done with notebook technology. The best laptops in existence. I reckon they would provide us with an indication of what’s to be launched but no one would seriously buy laptops for gaming at that time. As larger companies see the opportunities in the gaming laptop market, things looks to have shifted.

Compared to the tiny resellers these companies know they can make even more margin. As the profit margins on mid range notebooks have gotten so tiny, producing specialized gaming notebook computers is one tactic to render a higher gross markup. They can also use their large marketing budgets to seduce buyers further into parting with their savings or bringing out the charge cards to buy laptops like these ones. This is a giant threat to smaller niche resellers. With the things at their disposal they could simply get rid of smaller competition. I think customers will trust the larger brands more if they get something high priced. I reckon its funny that as it comes with a brand name they’re carelessly though of as the best laptops. Still though, for the little small retailers this may prove to be positive. Consumers like to be able to customize as they can specify what is most desirable to their requirements. Such consumers are normally techies and can check all the minute details. In some cases the speed is way more important than the styling for certain types of people.

For the prospect, this holds plenty of advantages. As this pushes down the prices even further, top end technology will get increasingly affordable to the customer. I mention that with a large amount of uncertainty though. New laptop computers are continuously coming out and these new systems usually go for premium prices. Even though I still think outcomes will be good due to the saturating market, we’ll have to watch.

Droughts and Salt Water Canals Random Thoughts

We need solutions to our drought crisis in this country. There are simple but expensive solutions; for instance; Desalination, salt water rivers and conservation strategies. Now before you accusing me of hyping any of the newest technologies or try to tell me it costs too much, let me explain something about the Earth’s water supply. Only 3% of the Earth’s Water is fresh. This includes the water and moisture in the clouds, underground reservoirs, rivers, lakes, streams and pipelines. So if we keep increasing the population of mammals we will need to have a larger supply of fresh water. The oceans are full and the atmosphere converts this to fresh water and then it rains and we collect it. So far we end up flooding areas when we make it rain or we fail. We use up all the fresh water in the waterways, which pass through our cities and we waste the rest on things that are not important unless you love what Tiger Woods does. People say it will cost too much to take water from the ocean where 70 percent of our population lives and turn it into fresh water to serve that population’s growing needs. Well I say it does not cost that much at all. Water generally and it depends where you live in the US, costs about $ 1.60-2.10 per 743 gallons, (a unit of water) do not ask me about our system of measurement I am still trying to figure out how much a fathom, knot, bushel or pint is. Apparently the scientists have not figured out the difference between a yard and a meter either judging by the crash of the last Mars Probe a few years back, even though I do not believe it actually crashed.

So let us say that water tripled in price? Is that a big deal really? No, because we already use twice the water we need average household uses 20-40 units of water and if they were more conservative with the water they would use only 10-20 units thus instead. Thus their bill would be in half and if you doubled that well there you are again; no big deal really. And now you have unlimited supply and people up river do not have to supply people who choose to live in dry arid places where water is piped or canal it in from far away. Los Angeles area for instance sits on the water yet takes water from the Bay Delta, Mono Lake and Colorado River, when PHX and Las Vegas both need the water. On the East coast same thing you have the megalopolis from Boston to D.C. that needs incredible amounts of water yet nearly every major city including NYC sits within miles of the ocean. Come on people Duh? Critics say it costs too much to build, it will never pay itself back and it will kill areas of wetland, which host at least four hundred species of rare mosquitoes. (Yah the kind that carry West Nile virus with big stingers). Desalination is the answer it always has been and we can build water canals to deliver this water to almost every Major Southern US City, problem solved. We can also use this to balance out the planet in places where gravity is uneven due to our taking oil or water out of the ground, open spaces under the surface. This will also cause the Earth to spin more evenly chill out the weather patterns, slow global warming and solve hundreds of other issues. You say I am crazy, oh yah check this out;

http://static.howstuffworks.com/pdf/express-v1n1.pdf

and this is a known fact lets see if you score a 100% on this quiz smarty pants;

http://caliban.physics.utoronto.ca/neufeld/myposts.txt

and perhaps pick up a copy of Feburary edition of Scientific American.

http://static.howstuffworks.com/pdf/express-v1n1.pdf

Now we can figure out where to put these surface canals and reservoirs and straighten out the wheel like weights when you balance your tires and we get for that effort less intense weather, like Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, typhoons, Tornados, etc.

http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/pseudosc/flipaxis.htm and

http://freespace.virgin.net/benkins.uk/Chap1.htm .

What we are talking about is taking a need for water for humans and balancing out the gravity of the planet simultaneously. So lets just say we will never perfectly balance out the planet. So what if we can add salt water canals in areas, which will be closer to a balanced spinning of Earth, we have accomplished two objectives and we will gain much from this. For instance if Mono Lake were filled up with water would that extra weight be in a good spot? If yes do it; if no do not; if you do, use that as the reservoir to make your fresh water with. If you look closely at the topography of the US you will see many places were building a saltwater canal is very simple and really costs less than building a highway.

and as you can see from this PHX project the fees are not overly costly to do this as one would predict, also check out the plant being built in Tampa Bay, FL;

http://www.tampaelectric.com/TENWCommNewsDesal.html

and the fees are not going to be that bad, our technology is so much better than it was before. And whereas you may turn on your TV set and see the latest floods around the world rest assured that this is a global issues now, and we will have over 60,000,000,000 people on this planet by 2045. And you know what that is really not that far away, isn’t that the year the ponzi scheme called Social Security will implode? It is not really that far from now and certainly not long in the history of our species.

If we want to continue on this path, we must pay attention to the needs of human life. The children born today, yes today in August of 2005 will have a life expectancy of 120 years, they will live until 2125, much longer than 2045, for 2045 is right around the corner. And this is without all the latest drugs, artificial limbs and components grown from stem cells such as hearts, kidneys, liver, bone marrow, brain tissue and lungs. All this is in the works my friend and no fundamentalist religious endeavors are going to stop the pursuit to find the cure for cancer, Alzheimer’s or heart disease either. So you may plan on being around for a while and watching your grandkids become grandparents. And see all the people you helped make that have infested the planet. Now without condemning you for creating all these people, you need to think about what you are doing here. If we all decide to follow our destiny and that of our ancestors to procreate, we must be wise enough to figure out a way to feed them all, house them and look after them, and one thing above all they will need is water.

The air should clean itself as we develop different ways of transportation through free enterprise and innovations such as fuel cell technologies and alternate energies. So let’s concentrate on solving these drought issues by coming to a long term understanding of the real problems and then work towards those technologies which serve the entrepreneur and free market best short term, and simultaneously solve a greater need to serve the future of mankind, because it does appear that we are all congregating in the same locations and over taxing such fundamental needs as water supply.

We need to control the weather and the best way to do that is to balance the planet and eliminate the variables in our weather first. The wobbling can stop, we can have drink, control the weather, have jobs, and off springs, as it appears to be one of the strongest innate needs of man and live long and fulfilling lives without risk of starvation by millions, agricultural disaster in entire continents and unpredictable weather. How serious is all this. Well there is ample time, but crisis management predicts that the best time to solve a problem is clearly before it happens. Building salt water canals is really easy, really simple and we could have them all completed in less than four or five years, plenty of time to curb any major calamity.

Tell me when you had enough evidence of what I am saying. Stop reading only the newspapers and realize the droughts today are going to be worse in the future as we add more people, more golf courses, more lawns, more houses along the same over taxed, over worked and under supplied rivers of an Earth whose temperatures still rising even after the height of the last three years ago high of the solar maximum and yet the cool temperatures have never recovered.

The planet did not cool back down yet, and even if it did, there is not enough of the current water in many parts of the country to accept more people. So if you are waiting for the down side of a short-term cycle of a heated planet it ain’t happening anytime soon. Face it as it is we do not have enough water to continue this rate of population growth. Maybe in the wettest of years it can handle a few more, but not without some serious consideration to conservation, some continued excellent planning by developers, who by the way should be congratulated on their incredible success in sustainable housing and positive sharing of resources in energy conservation and use of materials.

We must look at all levels of this situation. The time is coming when every year will be a drought year, simply due to predictable usage and reasonable assumptions in supply and demand. We need a solution, we need to work together and we better plan for tomorrow, because it was yesterday recently and we knew we would be here today. What say you?

UK broadband exhibits capability issues

While controversial reports displayed UK’s arousal from such congestion difficulties, recent broadband analysts claim otherwise. Broadband.co.uk’s analytical team confirmed that broadband users are habitually affected by speed declines, especially noticeable during peak usage time. This is caused by a congestion of network availability, resulting from the overburdening of clientele.

Results from such reports show that overnight and daytime service exemplifies the greatest speed across the charts, including less utilized subscribers. Subscribers BE, O2, and Orange seem to consistently maintain sustaining speeds during peak periods, suggesting a higher level of network capacity within their system. Those which seemingly struggle with speed inadequacy perhaps construe their lack in connections capability.

As a result of this development, the new trend for potential subscribers involves analyzing performance at different times, deciding which is congested least at times considered most necessary. With the common reliability which most broadband providers offer, consumers worry more about catering to their specific needs. Finding a robust service which is available when they desire has become of utmost priority.

The speed results regarding May 2008 not only presents the flaw in the industry, but additionally shows potential for the continuing arousal for capacity failure. These statistics from United Kingdom all demonstrate the deficiency in competence, a conjecture which can merely persuade the industry to progress capability through innovation.

Can A Business Continuity Plan Save Your Business?

Think about it!

When you start a business you create a business plan. When you want to bring a product to market, you create a marketing plan.

Doesn’t it make sense to create a Business Continuity Plan to save your business? Of course it does!

Not every business disruption is caused by a major disaster. In fact, most are caused by everyday problems.

The night maintenance crew accidentally unplugged the server. An employee attempted to access a database that was being upgraded and corrupted the information it contained. Or the transformer down the street blew up during a sudden thunder storm.

In each case, your company could have been negatively impacted!

A solid business resumption plan would have predefined your responses to any of these situations. In fact, it would have helped you avoid the first two and greatly reduced the impact of the last.

Consider these statistics:

• 52% of American companies have had operations seriously interrupted because of computer hardware problems…

• 43% American companies have had operations negatively impacted because of problems with their software…

• 34% have had business operations seriously interrupted because of human error…

• 75% of companies impacted by a serious catastrophic event fail within two to five years…

Yes, a good business resumption plan is a time consuming project. Yes, you do not have enough time for the projects you already have. Much less the time to take on something new!

Ask yourself these simple questions.

1. What would happen to my business if all of my customer data were destroyed?

2. What would happen to my business if my building was flooded or destroyed?

If the answers to questions like these have only negative outcomes, then you need the services of a professional Business Continuity Planner.

Understanding Sleep And Hibernate Power Settings On Your Computer

New computers come with two new power settings that may be unfamiliar to many people. The settings known as “sleep” and “hibernate” may sound fun and playful but can actually be powerful tools to extend the life of your computer, give your laptop a longer battery life, and waste less energy. Let’s take a look at how to get the most use out of these new settings.

Let’s say you’re going to lunch, a meeting, or going to run some errands, but will be coming back to use your computer in a few hours. You might want to turn your computer off so it doesn’t waste electricity, but your “computer guy” (or girl) told you it’s dangerous to turn your computer on and off all the time, so what do you do? This would be a perfect time to use the “sleep mode” on your computer. When you tell your computer to go to sleep, it turns off the monitor, stops the disk drives and saves its current state into memory. When you return, just touch your mouse or keyboard and your computer quickly wakes up, and you’re exactly where you left off.

What if you’re going to be away from your computer for a longer period of time but will be coming back relatively soon? This is when you should use the hibernate mode. Think of hibernate is a deeper state of sleep. In hibernate mode your monitor is shut off, hard disks are stopped and your state is saved. A major difference between sleep and hibernate is power consumption. In sleep mode your computer is in a very low power state, and can wake up quickly. In hibernate mode your computer isn’t using any power so it takes longer to warm up.

Some other tips you should keep in mind are always save your existing work before going into sleep or hibernate modes. Occasionally the computer will fail to wake up and you will lose any unsaved data. Laptop owners should also remember sleep uses power and will eventually drain the battery.

Dealing with Conflict

Dealing with conflict is a frequent concern for many organizations. Managers and supervisors have to deal with conflict on a daily basis. Many times conflict happens when people see situations differently. Often the potential conflict can be defused by understanding the other person’s point of view.

Much has been written on different personality or behavioral styles. A very positive way to deal with conflicts is to gain an understanding of the four different behavioral styles.

For example, some people are the no-nonsense, get-the-job-done type. To them, the most important thing is the task. They like to take decisive action and take pride in a job well done.

Other people are more focused on people relationships. They see work more from a team viewpoint. They want people to get along with one another and support each other.

When a no-nonsense type of person supervises a relationship type person, there is the potential for conflict. The get-the-job-done supervisor will get more work accomplished from the relationship type person if the supervisor allows for freedom to interact with others. By actively listening to the employee’s concerns, the get-the-job-done supervisor will obtain greater productivity and respect.

The other two styles are the think-about-the-details type person and the enthusiastic adaptive type person. The think-about-the-details type person likes to think things through and dislikes being rushed to get something done. After all, they want to do a quality job. The think-about-the-details type person also prefers to do work in a step-by-step way.

Can you imagine what kind of conflict a get-the-job-done supervisor would get into with a think-about-the-details type person if the supervisor didn’t respond appropriately to their style? The get-the-job-done supervisor probably may have greater success with the enthusiastic adaptive type person. The enthusiastic adaptive type person tends to react immediately and adapt to different work experiences as long as they are interesting and motivational. By understanding the other person’s point of view, managers and supervisors will have a more productive work environment.

Dreams or Dreamers? Part One

From my Encyclopedia.

DREAMS OR DREAMERS?: -

“We are told by Herodotus that in the temple of Bel {This is the Keltic god known as Ba’al by the Phoenicians, Bel might have been in Babylon through the Byblos city on the Persian Gulf that sold ships to the Egyptians in 2900 BC. Later Byblus in Lebanon is thought to be what some [who try to limit Phoenician interest] call Byblos as a small part of a decreasing international influence.} in Babylon, a priestess lay on a bed ready to dream visions of the second class, and that the beds of such soothsayers were often made of the skin of a ram –is well known.

The ancient Hebrews obtained such dreams by sleeping among tombs, and this especial gateway to the supernatural world seems to have been, and still is known to the majority of nations, primitive and civilized, as intimately as hypnosis and other methods of reaching its planes and hearing its pronouncements. Sleep was, of course, often induced by drugs, whether the soma of the Hindus, the peyote of the ancient Mexicans, the hashish of the Arabs, or the opium of the Malays or Chinese, and these narcotics which have the property of inducing speedy sleep and of heightening inward vision were and still are greatly prized by professional dreamers allover the world, especially as they rendered dreaming almost immediately possible.” (10)

‘Professional dreamers’ following visions from above and divining our future, quickly became willing to sell their advice to those who threatened them if they didn’t. The dependence on such easy answers continues among the mass of population ’til this moment as ‘experts’ and politicians join the media in a free for all. We believe the breakdown in matriarchal influence and egalitarian governance created this cauldron of deceit in the Mediterranean after the influx created by the rising waters that formed the North Sea due to glacial effects if not sooner, when the northern ‘Hyperboreans’ colonized the area. The issue of what is real about dreams is open for debate to say the least but there are many who think they can interpret the chaos of these partial insights. Personally I enjoy the practice, if there is something positive to say but I regard ‘free will’ as the most important ingredient in what really makes the world ‘go round’. William James and his book ‘Pragmatism’ was important to Carl Jung whose work in dream interpretation sets the stage for many symbolic and archetypal interpreters to this day.

“The first treatise on the subject was that of Artemidorus, who lived in the time of Antonius Pius. He differentiated between the dreams of kings and those of commoners, as he believed that the visions of royalty must have reference to the commonwealth {The Bible and the plagues predicted by Joseph, for example.} and not to the individual {No reason in common sense or science to believe this. Carl Jung was a commoner who saw the First World War in advance. Tesla’s vision led to many great and useful inventions - however dreams are seldom so vivid or what one can call ‘flashes of illumination’ - that is an entirely different phenomena.}. Dreams which represented something as happening to the individual who dreams them, show that they have a personal significance, whereas if the dream relates to another it will concern him alone. He detailed the numerous species of dreams throughout five books, and then adduced numerous examples. The rules of Artemidorus are far from clear, and according to them, any dream might signify any event, and any interpretation of the same might be considered justifiable.

The method of testing dreams according to Amyraldus in his ‘Discours sur les Songes divins’ (Saumur, 1625) is whether the instructions and advice that they contain make for good or ill–a test it is impossible to apply until after the result is known. But Amyraldus surmounts this difficulty by proposing to test dreams by the evidence they show of divine knowledge–by asking oneself in short, whether the dream it was desired to examine gave any evidence of such things as God alone could know.

It would seem from an examination of such dreams as were submitted to the diviners of antiquity that the symbolism they exhibited was of a character so profound that it could only be unriddled by an interpreter who received divine aid, such as was afforded in the case of Moses or Daniel in the Bible. It is plain, however, that the most far-fetched interpretations were given to many of the most epoch-making dreams of antiquity, and indeed, the oneiocritical {Greek dream interpreters} system is one of the weakest spots in the armor of occult science, and was the first of its departments to fall into disrepute and become the prey of charlatans.

There are serious students of the occult who doubt entirely the occult significance of dreams, and it must be granted that no good reason exists for classing them generally with the vision, or a condition of ’second sight’ or ecstasy.” (11)

The amount of time we live in our dream state is substantial and there are many things we can work upon in our dreams. To regard it as occult is somewhat foolish. If one learns and achieves things that are of value, should be a higher concern. Truly some probably can gain tap-ins through the dream state, especially if they become adept at conscious dreaming and astral travel. To say it is supernatural is an appeal to ignorance. There is no such thing as ’super’-natural - it is all a matter of what we can’t explain. Dream work and Yoga’s ’soft focus’ have answered or made sense of many things that mental blocks due to over- intellectualization might create. There are ways to become conscious and effective in dreams and the overall experiencing of life - that is how I prefer to think of it, rather than a psychic developmental thing. Psychic aspects of life usually have a more physical component. If our soul is what counts then what we interpret from the physical during the sorting out process of dream reality might be more important than what happens during the waking state.

“Dreams and Psychical Phenomena

Dreams of a supernormal character fall within the purview of psychical research. The dividing line between normal and supernormal dreams is not easy to draw. Subconscious elaboration often presents supernormal affects.

Goethe solved many definite scientific problems in his dreams and also composed poems. So did La Fontaine compose The Fable of Pleasures and Coleridge Kubla Khan. Bernhard Palissy made one of his most beautiful ceramic pieces on dream inspiration. Maury confessed: ‘I have had in dream ideas an inspiration that could never have entered my consciousness when awake.’ Tartini heard his Sonate del Diavolo played by Beelzebub in a dream. Holde composed La Phantasie in his sleep, Nodier’s ‘Lydia’ was similarly born. R. L. Stevenson’s most ingenious plots were evolved in the dream state. Kruder, Corda and Maignan solved mathematical problems in dream, Condillac finished an interrupted lecture.

A dream of Professor Agassiz is frequently quoted. He had been for two weeks striving to decipher the somewhat obscure impressions of a fossil fish on the stone slab in which it was preserved. It was found impossible. In his dream he saw the fish with all the missing features perfectly restored. The image escaped him on awakening. He went to the Jardin des Plantes in the hope that an association with the fossil would recapture it. No such thing happened. Next night he again dreamed of the fish and in the morning the features of the fish were as elusive as ever. For the third night he placed paper and pencil near his bed. Towards the morning the fish again appeared in his dream. Half dreaming, half awake he traced the outlines in the darkness as best he could. On full awakening he was surprised to see details in his nocturnal sketch, features which he thought impossible. He hastened to the Jardins des Plantes, began to chisel on the surface of the stone, taking the sketch as a guide and to his surprise he found the hidden portions of the fish as indicated in the drawing.” (12)

I am not convinced this is dream state work. The early and late REM sleep is more akin to Beta brainwave relaxation. With bio-feedback and its creative state some ad agents like those at McDonald’s have used this state to make and test ads. Hank Wesselman has been studied by the University of Illinois and he is even more able to reach the 40 MGHZ brainwave state than psychic healers and yogis. He is a person who was part of the anthropological or archaeological team that found Lucy and his gift was brought out by his wife who is a shamanic teacher. It is possible to generate this kind of state while taking exams (I’ve often done it.) and good marks often come. Those who stay in alpha state and experience tension and pressure or stress are less able to recall, create or integrate. Intuition is also often mistaken as psychic. There can be a component of it, and as Mr. Shepard notes it is often a fine line between some of these concepts. Thus you are able to see that I am not a believer in unexplainable phenomena, rather I think we are simply not able to explain it in every case because we are learning or are presently ignorant.

Father’s Day

BASEBALL MEMORIES

A DAUGHTER’S TALE

My father wanted a son. I understood that from the time I could intuit those secret messages that children know without knowing they know. My dad loved me. I also knew that. But, raising a daughter was foreign to him. Certainly, it wasn’t his first choice. So, in the ways that a child tries to please a parent, I tried to please him, to fulfill and give him what he wished for. It worked up to a point. Although in later years he was proud of me, for most of our life together, he was never comfortable around me.

Baseball was king in New York City when I was a small child, and although my dad was an inveterate Dodger’s fan, we lived near the Yankee Stadium and it was there we bonded as much as we were ever able to. Warm weekends, when he was free, we went to the game. I looked forward to going with him. The hotdog vendors, and cotton candy, peanuts and all the junk food my mother never knew about a shared secret that made the day just that much sweeter, that much more special. Sometimes he remembered how small I was and he reached out to hold my hand. Sometimes, he got caught up in the excitement of the game, forgetting he had a young daughter to take care of. I understood that too, and in those moments I reached up to touch his hand, sometimes wrapping my small fingers around his larger ones, reminding him of my presence.

I learned the game well along with the roster of great Yankee and Dodger players, with a few others thrown in: Yogi Berra, Pee Wee Reese, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Satchel Paige and of course, the heroic Jackie Robinson. I watched the plays, the miraculously caught high pop fly balls, the catcher (Yogi) always in control, the umps calling their balls and strikes, the seventh inning stretch when I was more than ready to go home. And, sometimes, a shared ice cream sundae, one more secret indulgence, before returning home.

My mother never understood the specialness of these outings. Actually, neither of my parent’s did. She knew I was away for the day and therefore I was not underfoot. And, he had a companion, not the son he wanted, but I did the best I could to give him the joy he wished for. Baseball became our bond as it also became part of my lifeblood.

Father’s Day, 2001 years after both my parent’s death: They are gone but baseball is still with me. The guys in my psychotherapy practice are often surprised at how much I know and how passionate I get discussing the game. We wander into discussions of how much the game has changed. We debate the appropriateness of the player’s now mega salaries. We argue plays and groan or applaud a home run. The men who have entrusted their lives to my professional skills and I bond. I have my dad’s baseball education to thank for that ability. I could never be the son he wanted. I haven’t forgotten the pain of always knowing that. But, for the now grownup grandmother who as a small girl tried to be what her dad wanted, baseball remains. I am grateful for that gift.
