Nearly 50 communities across the UK will soon have access to speedy internet connections, thanks to an initiative by BE. The internet service provider has recently announced plans to bring these communities to the information superhighway with a free broadband connection.

The identified communities will be getting Freerunner with BE broadband where no previous connections exist. With a £3m upgrade fund, the smaller BT telephone exchanges spread around Scotland are all set to work on improving broadband access in some of the more rural and remote areas of Scotland.

The telecommunications provider is in talks with the Scottish government to put forth a plan to shortlist and improve 50 exchanges in the country, focussing on locations with limitations to faster internet access. The final plan for the upgrade is expected to be published in the coming week.

Minister for Digital Britain Stephen Timms had earlier declared a 50p broadband levy to be added onto customers’ phone bills prior to the next general elections. The government will reportedly utilise this additional fund to pay for the development of improved and high-speed broadband networks across the UK.

Commenting on the upgrade, Finance Secretary John Swinney said that despite the availability of high-speed broadband in Scotland, the government and BT Broadband have identified widespread displeasure among rural communities, where users are unable to avail better services.

A number of research reports have proposed that it is difficult to stop illegal file sharing on the internet. In the run-up to the release of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain Report, PaidContent:UK has conducted a research in partnership with Wiggin, a media law firm. The research, named as the Digital Entertainment Survey, has revealed that warning letters from internet service providers have little effect on online pirates.

Only one-third of the pirates said that the warning letter issued by the internet service provider would have a deterrent effect on them. However, around four-fifth of the responders said that they will no longer share files illegally if they were threatened with broadband connection termination when the letter of warning is issued. In 2008, only 70% people were ready to stop file sharing on the threat of disconnection.

The reason for the change in figures is that the people who answered the survey in 2008 were under the impression that there will be some serious action along with the letter containing the warning. The respondents in 2008 knew that there would be no direct action after the letter was sent.

However, the recommendation of the report to disconnect the broadband connection in case of online infringement of copyright has not garnered much positive support. The CEO of Carphone Warehouse, Charles Dunstone reported to The Guardian that no action could deter pirates from downloading copyrighted content. VoIP is the newest advancement in audio communications technology, and has a
variety of different applications that make it useful. VoIP stands for Voice

packet switching sends and receives information only when you need it instead of
in a constant stream. It also sends the information packets along whatever open
channels are available rather than a dedicated line, which is much more
efficient. The information is simply reassembled at the source.

The payload of each packet has a destination coded into it determining the
ultimate destination. When the computer at the other end receives all of these
packets, it will reassemble the information into useable form. This form of
sending audio data is extremely efficient because it always takes the cheapest
route that is also the least congested.

The compression of information and use of multiple routes in order to send
that information over the most efficient route makes sending audio over packet
switching quicker, much less expensive and more efficient. The number of calls
that can be sent is orders of magnitude higher than it was with the more
traditional analog circuit switching systems.

For companies, the savings in long distance charges can be in the hundreds or
even thousands of dollars per year. If companies also make extensive conference
calls, VoIP makes even more sense when combined with conferencing options such
as document sharing in systems offered by companies like Voxwire and iVocalize.

Different types of VoIP calling are available

• The most commonly used VoIP system is from one computer to another. To set
  up this type of service, you will need to have a sound card installed in both
  computers along with microphones and Internet connections. For practical
  purposes, you’ll want a broadband connection or DSL — a dial-up modem will be
  so slow the sound quality just won’t be that good. Aside from that, all you
  need is a software package that can set you up with everything you need to use
  VoIP to make phone calls to whomever is also set up with the same system.
• You can also invest in IP phones if you want something that looks just
  like your standard analog telephones but with VoIP connectability. These
  simply replace the old-style RJ-11 connectors with Ethernet connectors
  (RJ-45). Hardware such as routers and the needed software are built right in.

  in certain areas, and these “hot spots” have popped up across the U.S.

The upshot of VoIP is that standard long-distance charges may soon become a
thing of the past. As more and more consumers turn on to VoIP and broadband
connections make it easy and inexpensive (as well as practical) to make phone
calls over the Internet, fewer individuals will be willing to pay high rates to
make a telephone call they can make for free or next to nothing via their
computer.
