Avoiding Trouble with Suited Aces

Suited aces, where an ace and a card of lower value are held of the same suit in the hole, are probably one of the most overrated hands in all of online poker. Essentially a weak ace in disguise (unless your kicker is large enough that you would play it unsuited too), suited aces are often responsible for getting players into more trouble than good they bring, unless that online poker player is careful to avoid the trouble of getting trapped when you make a hand with these cards that isn’t the flush that you had wanted.

When dealt suited aces before the flop, as mentioned above I try to think about the hand as if it were not suited. If the kicker with the ace is large enough that I would want to play it regardless, I proceed. If it isn’t and I am in early position, there is too slim a number of holdings that will improve the hand that make it worthwhile. I fold. If in middle to late position, and I can use the raise to represent something else, I will push and see what happens. But pushing too hard with just a bare ace hoping to hit a flush is a scenario that is going to work out only a small portion of the time. Look out for that when you play poker online.

Playing AK in Position when You Miss

More than half of the time that you play AK suited or unsuited and go to see a flop, you aren’t going to make any kind of pair or draw. Total air is more common than making a hand or the semblance of one, and so if you are going to work this poker online hand as the viable beast that it is, you’re going to have to be just as ready to play it right when it becomes nothing as when you make a poker hand you can push and feel strongly about. One of the biggest points to consider about AK is that a lot of the time, even when you miss, you’re going to still have the best poker hand. Assuming your opponent doesn’t have a pair preflop, the odds of them not making a pair are just the same as yoursthey have two cards, you have two cards. For this reason, most players who have raised preflop with AK will say that you should also fire on the flop regardless of whether or not you’ve improved. Playing in position has the added bonus of being able to judge a little better whether or not your opponent has actually missedif he checks, he probably has not much, unless he is the type to check raise.

Do You Have a Gambling Problem?

In our society, many people use the terms “gambling problem” and “gambling addiction” interchangeably. However, these are not the same thing and confusion between the two can prevent people from getting the help that they need. Gambling addiction is a fully fledged serious issue that often requires that a player seek professional help to learn how to better balance the aspects of their life. Poker addicts sometimes need to completely avoid the game in the future because they are unable to find the balance. People with a gambling problem do not have as many serious issues as full addicts face.

A gambling problem is often the first step on the way to addiction, but it does not necessarily imply that a player will become an addict. The difference between a gambling problem and a gambling addiction is that people with gambling problems have the opportunity to stop their unhealthy relationship with online poker before it gets too serious. A gambling problem occurs when a player is first starting to ignore other aspects of their life in favor of poker online. If they recognize this tendency early, people with gambling problems can prevent their problem from becoming an addiction. If you even suspect that you may have a poker online gambling problem, seek help early.

The Dangers of KQ

With the range of hands so wide and dependent on the flop to be defined, it is easy in poker to allow yourself a loose range of cards that you are willing to come in with. Limiting this range, or at least knowing what hands to play cautiously with, and which are likely to be dominated in a big showdown, is probably as much the name of the game as is any other part of poker online.

One of the main hands that tends to be overplayed especially by newer players is King Queen. On its face, being the two big face cards, KQ seems like it is a pretty great hand. If you hit your king or queen, you have a pretty high pair and a good kicker. And in smaller pots, KQ can end up being good a lot of the time, especially at tables where people are playing even weaker big cards for raises, etc.

But at a tighter, smarter table, playing KQ for too much money is asking to go broke. First off, it is dominated by so many major hands that it is likely to face in a raised pot situation: AA KK QQ, AK AQ, etc. In big pots, then, hitting your K or Q on the flop can lead to big losses, whereas, unless your poker online table is really loose, you don’t have a lot to gain from the hand. Limiting your use of this hand to what you’d do with, say, 10 Jack suited, etc., seems a much more appropriate course.

Avoid this Squeezing Mistake

Knowing how to squeeze your opponent is one of the hallmarks of an advanced poker player. The inability to do so effectively is also the mark of a fish. To avoid being labeled as marine wildlife, you need to avoid the most common squeezing mistake. In a nutshell, the most common mistake that would be squeezers make is to misread the board. If you think that the player opposite to you is going for a flush and he isn’t, there can be severe financial consequences. Besides the blow to your pocketbook that comes with a blunder at the poker table, there is the knock to your ego to consider. Is it worth risking it?

You need to remember that the whole practice of squeezing is based on the fact that the odds are low of completing a flush or a straight draw. However, the odds are not so bad if your friendly neighborhood poker online player just happens to be trying for a full house. If you are not able to accurately predict what is in his hand, you have no reason to attempt squeezing. Leave it to the more advanced players that have mastered the ability to card count. Don’t despair, you will be there one day but misinformed squeezing attempts will not get you there any faster.

Sit ‘n Go: Early Blinds

In the beginning of a sit ‘n go online poker game, many players will make the mistake of playing aggressively. The game has just started, players are amped up, and they want to come out swinging. The problem is, the blinds are small, but this risks are still there. If you are at a sit ‘n go poker online tournament, the blinds can start at $1-$2 and finish at $10-$20, but the risks are the same when you bet on them. All-in for a $3 pot of blinds and all-in for $30 of blinds still costs you all your chips.

In the beginning phase of a sit ‘n go online poker tournament, don’t play aggressively. It’s not worth risking your chips for a minimal pot when the payoffs will be much higher later in the game, so be selective about what hands you choose to play in the beginning. High pocket pairs and high suited connectors are fine, but avoid riskier hands like low unsuited connectors and medium pocket pairs aren’t worth your trouble.

Unless you’ve got a killer starting hand or you know you can limp in without being raised, use the beginning of the tournament to sit back and observe your opponents. In the beginning of the game, you’ll get more out of learning how your opponents play than you will from buying up a few small pots.

Dead on the Draw

Sometimes online poker players get lucky and complete a winning hand at the casino even before all the cards come out. In that fortunate circumstance, the poker player can slow play the hand, enticing others to bet and basically trapping them to build a pot.

The situation is dire for the players unknowingly up against the made nut hand. They think their hand still has possibilities to win based on the fact they’ve completed a pair or trips, or still have lots of outs to complete a bigger hand. But those players are “drawing dead” because they are already beaten by the best possible hand already completed.

Knowing your opponent is drawing dead is just about the sweetest moment in poker. Not knowing that you are drawing dead is poker at its most miserable. Is their any way to recognize that you might be drawing dead?

You must very carefully read the board. If you do not hold the absolute best hand possible, there is always the possibility someone else has, even though you are holding a good hand or one with lots of outs. It takes well-honed poker instincts to recognize that you might be drawing dead. By watching the table action and our opponents’ betting tactics, you will be better informed about making decisions to bet or fold.

Remember, if the board is paired, or straightening or setting up a flush, and none of those combinations connect to your hand, you’re better off folding it that taking the risk of drawing dead.

Rounders

Rounders is a film that resides in the hearts of poker enthusiasts everywhere. You’ve got to love it. Even if you’ve sworn poker off after a series of bad beats, one glimpse of that film and you’re ready to make a go of it. My friends and I would actually put it on to pump us up before we headed out to a tournament or a home game. If you’ve seen it you’d understand.

Rounders revolves around a pair of poker studs played by Edward Norton and Matt Damon, and (of course) they fall into debt to some dangerous folks and are forced to gamble their way out of it. Throughout their quest to save their butts from their debtors, we get treated to a cornucopia of poker wisdoms and strategies.

The nods to famous players and well-known hands, as well as the knowledge of the game make it apparent that the film was written by someone who loves the game. The game play scenes have all the action of a WSOP game on ESPN, and Damon’s narration gives the action an extra dimension. Throw John Malkovich and John Turturro into the mix, and you’ve got a solid movie that appeals to everyone, especially us poker nuts.

Tight versus Loose Slot Machines

When going to a casino, you want to play slots. However, how do you know which ones will pay out as much? There are slot machines at casinos that are called tight or loose. The names mean either a machine pays out well or it does not pay out that much.

Loose slot machines are of course the most popular because they pay out more and more often. The tight slot machines are still tried because you never know when the big payoff will occur from that. In both types of slot machines, you can still have fun with it, just depends on how much you wish to invest in the fun.

If you wish to try a tight slot machine, the best way to go about it is to limit the amount of money you put in at a time. In doing this, you are limiting the amount you will loose. You will still have fun, but not go away with loosing a lot. Waiting to see which ones have been played a lot is also a way to see if there could be a pay out soon.

Casinos have a variety of slot machines, both loose and tight. Some will pay off soon and others you will need to play more often to do so.
