Olympia is one of the most famous and visited destinations in the Greek region of Peloponnese. Some of the major discoveries and one of the most important excavations in the city of Olympia took place in the year 1829. After this French expedition, a German one followed their work and several important objects, such as tools, and the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles were found.

Olympia is situated in an area that is surrounded by hills and mountains in such a way that they provide a very peculiar and interesting background to this ancient spot. Meeting the city of Olympia, its antique statues and ruins can be one of the most memorable experiences tourists can have while exploring the Peloponnese.

These days, just about every town or hamlet in the United States boasts of an “authentic” renaissance festival. Invariably, these festivals feature such attractions as “authentic” renaissance maidens sporting authentic renaissance-era, biker chick tattoos and renaissance cuisine like Ye Olde hotdogs or Ye Olde pizza slices.

So most Americans know all about Renaissance festivals from their experiences stateside. However, just for fun, let’s consider the counterpart festivals in European countries where the Renaissance actually took place.

Denmark, for example, the country that brought us those ubiquitous plastic toys, Legos; has designated the entire year of 2006 to be “The Year of the Renaissance.”

Imagine my surprise, a father who has stepped on many a Lego in the dark with bare feet, to learn that Legos have nothing to do with the Renaissance, and were not in fact invented until much later. All along, I had assumed that I was enduring those pesky little toys because it was good for my children’s education. Shows what I know.

OK, back to Denmark. The entire country is open for business to celebrate the Renaissance. So enjoy your travels to Denmark and take in all these wonderful experiences. I’m not sure if they will offer hotdogs and pizza slices at these festivals; but if they do, I’m certain they’ll have some Ye Olde Alka Seltzer available.

Oh, and watch your step. Especially when you are barefoot…in the dark.

Christmas is an emotional storm, and next comes Valentine’s, so take a break. Move from emotion to thinking and action.

1. Start planning a Valentine’s Party, or Martin Luther King Party. If you were running a day late and a dollar behind for Christmas, learn from it. Budget and start sooner, but have the fun of another “party” on the horizon. NB: Planning is a cerebral activity, i.e., neocortex.

2. Get active - add an extra hour to your daily workout. This creates physical energy, clears the mind, and flushes out toxic emotions.

3. Clean your house till it shines, and do the work yourself. This is a tradition for New Year’s in many cultures, symbolic of getting rid of bad stuff and making room for new stuff. Buy a special floor cleaning product. Sweep toward the doors, or vacuum, then remove the bag and carry it out to the garbage. Out! Out! Clean the furniture with something like Murphy’s oil, a soap and water-based product, not oil. Then clean the floors with the special cleaning product.

4. Clean the yard, shovel away dirty snow, clean the gutters, wash the windows, rake the leaves. It will be time to plant the daffodils and prune the roses before you know it.

5. Take a vacation. Go somewhere warm like a cruise to the Caribbean. The sun will do wonders for an attitude adjustment, as well as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). At home, get outside more, sit in the sunlight in your house for half an hour a day.

6. Hunker down and last it out - read good books, curl up by the fire, sleep, don’t fight it. It’s a hibernating time anyway. Get massages. Take naps.
7. Start a new project at work - it will give everyone a lift. Focus on thinking, not feeling.

8. Kickstart your brain by taking a new course. If you’re an extravert, go to community ed classes. If you’re an introvert, enjoy yourself online and take teleclasses or get a Teaching Company course (www.susandunn.cc/learn_EQ.htm) for a special treat. You can listen to the tapes in the car, or while jogging.

9. Change your diet dramatically. Do a juice fast, or something very cleansing and healthy within the constraints of your physical condition. Get that sugar and alcohol out of your system and replace it with vitamins and minerals. A family vacation to “The Happiest Place on Earth” is a rewarding experience you will never forget. With so much to see and do, it has become increasingly important to a lot of visitors that they plan accordingly and reserve comfortable and spacious accommodations. If you are traveling with children, the open spaces in a vacation home or villa will translate into added silence and downtime after a long day at the parks.

We’ve all been there before.
